News Release RI Department of Environmental Management 235 Promenade Street, Providence, RI 02908 (401) 222-2771 TDD/(401) 222-4462
DEM ACCEPTING APPLICATION REQUESTS FOR PRUDENCE/PATIENCE ISLAND ARCHERY DEER RESERVATION LOTTERY PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management's Division of Fish and Wildlife is accepting requests for applications for 2004 Prudence/Patience Island archery deer reservations. The applications must be postmarked no later than August 19.A reservation must be obtained in order to hunt deer with archery on Prudence and Patience Islands management areas during the first two weekend and weekday periods of the special season, which begins on October 22. One hundred thirty reservations for each weekend and weekday segment are available and will be issued via a computer-generated lottery system. Applicants will receive their reserved dates by mail in early September. There will be two lotteries. Those who hunted last year and returned their mandatory harvest record cards, as well as first time applicants, will be given preference in the first lottery. Remaining applicants will be entered into a second lottery to fill unfilled slots. The quota has been increased to 350 deer, and the limit has been increased from two to three deer per hunter to alleviate problems caused by the overabundance of deer on the islands. Hunters will be allowed to harvest one deer of either sex and one antlerless deer. Those checking an antlerless deer on either permit, as an incentive, can purchase an additional permit valid for harvesting another antlerless deer. All permits will be valid throughout the season, which ends on January 9, 2005, or earlier if the quota has been reached. Reservation applications, which have been simplified this year, can be obtained in person from DEM's Office of Boat Registration and Licensing at DEM Headquarters at 235 Promenade St. in Providence; at the Fish and Wildlife Division's main office at the Stedman Government Center in Wakefield; and at the Division's Great Swamp field office in West Kingston. Applications are also available online at www.dem.ri.gov, by clicking on "Publications" then "Application Forms." The forms may also be obtained by mail by sending a business size (9 1/2" by 4") self-addressed, stamped envelope to Deer Lottery, DEM Division of Fish and Wildlife, PO Box 218, West Kingston, RI 02892. Hunters must postmark and return completed applications along with a self-addressed, stamped business-sized envelope to the West Kingston address by August 19 to be eligible for a reservation and the lottery. Two hunting partners may apply on one application; however, a hunter's name may not appear on more than one application. Duplicate, inaccurate, incomplete, or illegible forms will not be accepted.
