DEM SAYS THIS IS ONE OF BEST YEARS FOR LOCALLY GROWN FRUITS AND VEGETABLES
Offers Guide to Farmers' Markets and Roadside Stands

PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management's Division of Agriculture reports that this is one of the best years on record for locally grown fruit and vegetable quality, with weather conditions optimum for producing some of the best corn in recent years.

Farmers' markets and roadside stands around the state are reporting excellent quality of all Rhode Island grown crops, according to Stephen Volpe, Deputy Chief of DEM's Division of Agriculture. At this time, consumers will find ample supplies of locally produced sweet corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, string beans, eggplant, peaches, plums, watermelon, cantaloupe, summer squash, lettuce, radishes, peppers, beets, cauliflower, carrots, celery, scallions, Swiss chard, blueberries, honeydew melons, and zucchini.

DEM's Division of Agriculture, which helps farmers with marketing information, offers a free brochure that lists the locations of all farmers' markets and roadside stands, along with addresses, hours, days and months of operation, and telephone numbers. To obtain a free brochure, call the Division at 222-2781 or find it on DEM's website, www.dem.ri.gov, by clicking on "Agriculture" under "Programs".

Of the many farmers' markets in Rhode Island, four are located in state parks; all four are open on a weekly basis until October, and accept farmers' market checks from the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) and Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program coupons.

The farmers' markets in DEM-operated parks and market hours of operation are:
  • Fishermens' Memorial State Park Farmers' Market in Narragansett, Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Haines Memorial State Park Farmers' Market on Metropolitan Park Drive in East Providence, Wednesdays from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Goddard Memorial State Park Farmers' Market in Warwick, Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Colt State Park Farmers' Market in Bristol, Fridays from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
