DEM BEGINS "SCHOONER EXPLORATIONS" MARINE HERITAGE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM ON 91-FOOT SCHOONER

PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management's new "Schooner Explorations" marine heritage educational program for both youths and adults is being offered this week on the 91-foot schooner Quinnapiack. The schooner is sailing from the Conanicut Marina in Jamestown.

Day programs, for youths aged 10 through 16, include hands-on experience in sail handling, navigation, seamanship, setting a trawl net, boating safety, and marine biology. The youngsters are being exposed to Narragansett Bay fisheries resources, environmental issues, and Rhode Island's maritime heritage. As music is part of Rhode Island's maritime heritage, traditional Irish, Cape Verdean, folk, bluegrass, and sea chantey music are included in all sailing programs. Cost of each day program, available daily through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. is $25. Twenty-five youngsters can be accommodated on each day. However, no openings remain, and there is a waiting list.

Evening sails for adults are also being offered, as well as family sails on Saturday and Sunday. Reservations for those events are also filled.

The educational sails are sponsored by DEM's Division of Fish and Wildlife aquatic resource education program.
