DEM DEDICATES NEW EQUESTRIAN FACILITIES AT SUNSET STABLES IN LINCOLN WOODS STATE PARK

PROVIDENCE -- The Department of Environmental Management, in partnership with The Champlin Foundations and the Department of Transportation, this morning celebrated new equestrian facilities at Sunset Stables in Lincoln Woods State Park and Goddard Memorial State Park. The new centers will allow DEM to provide increased public access to equestrian recreation in the state's most densely populated urban areas.

The new, identical facilities consist of a 40' wide by 97' long pre-engineered steel structure built by Morton Buildings. Inside each building are 12 horse stalls, a tack room, washroom, mechanical room, and an overhead hayloft. English and Western horseback instruction, guided trail rides, and pony rides are offered daily at the Sunset Stables site by Bar J Stock Company, and at C& L Stables at Goddard Memorial State Park by Lee Phillips.

"With today's dedication of this new equestrian facility at Lincoln Woods - and of a similar one at Goddard Memorial State Park in Warwick - we are assuring increased public access to horseback riding in Rhode Island's most densely populated urban areas," said DEM Acting Director Frederick J. Vincent. "Providing the public with new equestrian facilities for riding was a partnership effort between the public and private sectors, and one that immeasurably contributes to the recreational opportunities in our state parks as well as the tremendous quality of place we enjoy in Rhode Island."

DEM purchased the 24.5-acre Sunset Stables property on Twin River Road in 2000. The site includes a riding ring, stables, a residence, trails and backlands, and was one of the last large properties available to expand Lincoln Woods State Park. The acquisition of Sunset Stables also made an important addition to the corridor of open space that has been preserved in the Town of Lincoln.

"RIDOT was pleased to assist with the funding of these two equestrian facilities that certainly enhance Lincoln Woods and Goddard Park," said James R. Capaldi, P.E., RIDOT's Director. "We congratulate DEM and look forward to working with them to complete another equestrian facility on Coventry's Trestle Trail."

The total cost for the project, which includes the equestrian facilities at Lincoln Woods and Goddard Park, was $825,587. $525,000 was provided from The Champlin Foundations; the Federal Highway Administration, through the RI Trails Program, provided $280,280; and the state provided $20,307 through in-kind contributions. The project was designed by DEM's Division of Planning and Development, and was constructed by Seaview Construction.
