DEM TO HOLD INFORMATIONAL MEETING SEPTEMBER 22 ON WASTEWATER DISCHARGE PERMIT FOR TIVERTON HIGH SCHOOL

PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management has announced that it will hold a public meeting in Tiverton on September 22 to provide information and answer questions on its intent to re-issue a permit for the discharge of treated sanitary wastewater from Tiverton High School's on-site wastewater treatment facility into a wetland.

The school's wastewater treatment facility, which began operations in 1966, currently treats wastewater by extended aeration, sand filtration, and chlorine disinfection. The treated wastewater is discharged to a wetland that is tributary to the Sin and Flesh Brook, which flows into Nannaquacket Pond.

The discharge is permitted via a RI Pollution Discharge Elimination System (RIPDES) permit from DEM. The RIPDES program, under state law, regulates discharges into the waters of the state.

The upcoming meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 22, at 7 p.m. at the Tiverton Town Hall. It has been scheduled in response to requests from the public for additional information about the facility and its treatment process and will provide an opportunity for residents to offer any concerns and present any significant new information they may possess.

DEM has also extended the public comment period, originally scheduled to end on September 6, until October 21. A formal public hearing may also be requested during this extended comment period.

For additional information, residents can contact Joseph Haberek of DEM's Office of Water Resources at 222-4700 ext. 7715.
