DEM: OCTOBER 27 WEST NILE/EEE STATUS UPDATE
Very Few Mosquitoes Left; Testing Ended for Season

PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management announces that test results from 58 mosquito pools from a total of 49 traps set statewide between October 6 and October 12 are all negative for both West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE).

Due to cooler evening temperatures and significant reductions in mosquito populations, no traps have been set since the October 12 trap night, and no results are pending; therefore, this is the last weekly status update of the season. However, although there are few mosquitoes left, people, particularly those hiking in the woods, should be mindful that when the weather is warm and the air is still, there may be occasional biting activity until the first hard frost.

This year, in Rhode Island, one horse contracted EEE. EEE was found in three mosquito pools in South Kingstown, two mosquito pools in North Kingstown, one in East Greenwich, and one in Charlestown. Out of nearly 60 birds tested, three tested positive for EEE, and five tested positive for West Nile Virus.
