DEM, PARTNERS TO RECOGNIZE EFFORTS OF EASTSIDE MARKETPLACE, NBC, AND SHEILA DORMODY TO REDUCE MERCURY IN THE ENVIRONMENT

PROVIDENCE - Department of Environmental Management Acting Director Frederick Vincent will present gubernatorial proclamations to a non-profit organization, a local business, and an individual in recognition of their efforts to reduce mercury in the environment at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 23. The recognition program is sponsored by the State Mercury Education Reduction Group, of which DEM is a member.

Each of the award recipients has made significant efforts to educate the public about the health effects of mercury in the environment. Their work demonstrates a commitment to the environment and the health and public safety of Rhode Island residents. Through the combined efforts of those being recognized, the state will realize significant reductions in the amount of mercury in our environment, along with increased awareness of the dangers associated with the substance.

Those receiving citations will be the Narragansett Bay Commission, Eastside Marketplace, and environmental advocate Sheila Dormody. NBC will be recognized for implementing environmental best management practices in its Management of Waste Dental Amalgam program, which addresses a significant source of mercury emissions in Rhode Island. Eastside Marketplace, of Providence, will be honored for its efforts to promote the RI Department of Health's message "Fish is Good, Mercury is Bad", by organizing and implementing a consumer education program for its customers. Sheila Dormody, director of the Rhode Island chapter of Clean Water Action, will be recognized for her personal commitment, in association with Clean Water Action, in organizing and implementing statewide mercury reduction programs.
