DEM WILL HOLD PUBLIC WORKSHOP DECEMBER 9 ON PROPOSED CHANGES TO WATER QUALITY REGULATIONS

PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management announces that it will hold a public workshop on December 9 regarding proposed amendments to the state's water quality regulations. The workshop, which will provide an opportunity for an open discussion of the proposed changes, will be held at 6 p.m. in Room 300 at DEM Headquarters, 235 Promenade Street in Providence.

The majority of the proposed changes mirror changes to federal water quality regulations and are required by the federal government. They would, for instance, result in the adoption of different bacterial test methods and criteria for bathing beaches, as required by the Environmental Protection Agency. Other examples of proposed changes include the water quality classifications assigned to certain waterbodies, designation of additional special resource protection waters, and streamlining of the water quality certification process.

DEM will subsequently hold a public hearing on the proposed amendments on January 12, 2005, at 6 p.m. at DEM Headquarters. Comments for the official record can be presented at that time, or can be submitted through January 14 to Connie Carey at DEM's Office of Water Resources, 235 Promenade Street, Providence, RI 02908-5767.

Copies of the proposed regulations and the financial impact analysis can be obtained at DEM's Office of Water Resources, or by calling that office at 222-3961 weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. They are also available on DEM's website, www.dem.ri.gov, by clicking on "Topics", then "Water Quality" under "Water".
