DEM ANNOUNCES THAT PERMITS ARE AVAILABLE FOR SPECIAL RESIDENT CANADA GOOSE HUNTING SEASON IN SEPTEMBER

PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management has announced that a special early hunting season for resident Canada goose will be held from September 1 through September 30. The season will be open from one half hour before sunrise to sunset daily with a daily bag limit of eight geese and a possession limit of 16 birds.

The special season, established for the past ten years, is intended to help reduce the state's growing resident Canada goose population and the numerous nuisance complaints that DEM and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service receive annually about the geese, according to Michael Lapisky, DEM's Acting Chief of Fish and Wildlife. The early September season occurs before migratory Canada geese arrive.

All hunters must obtain a special September goose season permit at no cost from DEM's Division of Fish and Wildlife. Permits may be obtained in person at the Division's Great Swamp Field Office off Liberty Lane in West Kingston on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. They can also be obtained by mail by sending a self-addressed stamped envelope to DEM's Division of Fish and Wildlife, PO Box 218, West Kingston, RI, 02892.

Waterfowl hunters 16 years of age and older are reminded that to hunt during the early goose season they must purchase both a 2005 Rhode Island State Waterfowl Stamp and a Federal Waterfowl Stamp. Each stamp must be signed in ink across its face to be in compliance with state and federal laws.

Hunters are further reminded that they are required by federal law to have a Rhode Island State 2005 Harvest Information Program (HIP) permit on their person in order to hunt migratory game birds. HIP permits are available at no charge at local sporting good stores selling Rhode Island hunting and fishing licenses, at the Great Swamp field office, and at the Division of Fish and Wildlife's main office in the Oliver Stedman Government Center at 4808 Tower Hill Road in Wakefield.
