DEM ISSUES 2005-2006 HUNTING AND TRAPPING ABSTRACT
PROVIDENCE: The Department of Environmental Management's Division of Fish and Wildlife has issued the 2005-2006 Hunting and Trapping Abstract. The abstract provides seasons and bag limits, and summarizes updated Rhode Island hunting and trapping regulations. It also provides useful information such as sunrise and sunset times, health and safety tips, Chronic Wasting Disease regulations, and check station hours and locations.
This year's abstract features a new, larger layout. It also includes the following important updates:
- A new delineation of the mainland permit area. (Mainland is now defined as Providence, Kent, and Bristol Counties, all of Washington County except Block Island, and the towns of Tiverton and Little Compton. Mainland permits are not valid on Conanicut and Aquidneck Islands.)
- The new Conanicut/Aquidneck Islands (excluding the city of Newport) group of deer permits, which add six deer to the total Rhode Island bag limit.
- Easy-to-differentiate deer permits, elimination of bonus tags, and the ability to purchase the either-sex and antlerless permits at any time as well as use them at any time during their respective seasons.
- Chronic Wasting Disease restrictions on importing deer and deer parts from a number of states.
- New fall turkey season for archery hunters.
- Introduction of Hunters and Fishermen for the Hungry program, which allows sportsmen to donate portions of their catch to local pantries.
- Addition of Grills Cooperative hunting area in Westerly for hunting deer by bow and arrow and by muzzleloader, and for fall and spring turkey hunting.
The 2005-2006 Hunting and Trapping Abstract and full hunting and fishing regulations are available on line at DEM's website, www.dem.ri.gov, by clicking on "Regulations". The abstract is also available at check stations, and at several DEM offices, including the main Fish and Wildlife Office at the Oliver Stedman Government Center in Wakefield, the field headquarters at Great Swamp Management Area in Kingston, and the licensing office at DEM Headquarters in Providence. The full set of regulations can also be viewed at DEM's Fish and Wildlife Division headquarters in the Stedman Government Center.
