DEM TO CONSTRUCT 52-FOOT COURTESY DOCK AT FORT ADAMS; CURRENT RAMP TO BE CLOSED DURING CONSTRUCTION BEGINNING OCTOBER 11 PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management announces that it plans to begin construction of a 52-foot courtesy dock adjacent to the boat ramp at Fort Adams State Park in Newport on October 11. During construction, the boat ramp will be closed and public access to the site will be blocked. While construction is in progress, boaters are being advised to use the ramp at Kings Park, also in Newport. The six-foot wide floating courtesy dock will allow boaters to easily board their boats regardless of the level of the tide. It will be constructed of a concrete abutment and three floats anchored by timber piles. The decking of the floats will be constructed of a composite material comprised of recycled wood and polymers. The contractor for the $46,208 project, expected to take no more than a few weeks, is Narragansett Dock Works, Inc. of Narragansett. Funding is from the US Fish and Wildlife Service Federal Aid in Sportfish Restoration program. There are an estimated 54,000 boats that use Rhode Island waters, including 44,000 registered in the state. -30- |
