DEM ANNOUNCES PUBLICATION OF RHODE ISLAND AGRICULTURE GUIDE PROVIDENCE - Just in time for fall outings, the Department of Environmental Management announces the publication of its Rhode Island Agriculture Guide, which includes a list of fall events including autumn fairs, scarecrow making, hayrides and pumpkin picking. The guide also lists farms and orchards by region, so those so inclined can find the closest place to pick apples, buy fresh cider, or find the perfect jack-o-lantern."Agriculture is an important part of our quality of life, history, and economy," said Kenneth Ayars, Chief of DEM's Division of Agriculture, "and it is vital to maintain access to our many local and varied farm products. The Rhode Island Agriculture Guide will introduce more Rhode Islanders and tourists to all that our farming community has to offer." The publication is a year-round guide to the freshest local fruits and vegetables, as well as a wealth of other agriculture products including nursery stock, turf, honey, maple syrup and Christmas trees. It lists events for every season and includes a product availability chart as well as a simple state map. Produced by DEM's Division of Agriculture, with the assistance of the RI Division of Tourism and the RI Resource Conservation and Development Council, the guide was produced as a means of raising consumer awareness of the value of Rhode Island's farms and local farm products. Agriculture in Rhode Island is a $100 million plus industry; and the state is home to more than 850 farms. To receive a copy of the Rhode Island Agriculture Guide, call DEM's Division of Agriculture at 222-2781 -1- 4754 and record your name and address. The guide also will be posted on DEM's website, www.dem.ri.gov in the near future. -30- |
