DEM ANNOUNCES THAT BRISTOL HARBOR WILL REOPEN TO SHELLFISHING BEGINNING AT SUNRISE TOMORROW, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 10

PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management has announced that waters within Bristol Harbor and surrounding Hog Island will reopen to shellfish harvesting beginning at sunrise tomorrow, Saturday, December 10.

All waters north and east of a line from the southern tip of Popasquash Point, Bristol to Southwest Point on Hog Island and from the southwest point of Hog Island to the southwestern extremity of Arnold Point in Portsmouth, where a DEM range marker has been established, that were specifically closed in response to raw sewage overflows, will reopen.

They have been closed since November 23 because of a pump failure at the Bristol wastewater treatment facility that resulted in raw sewage overflows from various points in the treatment facility's collection system including manholes and pump stations.

All other shellfish closures remain in effect as described in the "Notice of Polluted Shellfish Grounds May 2005."

A recorded list of closed areas can be heard on DEM's shellfish information line, 222-2900.

For more information, contact Joseph Migliore in DEM's Office of Water Resources at 222-4700 ext. 7258.
