JOHN H. CHAFEE NATURE PRESERVE AT ROME POINT IN NORTH KINGSTOWN TO BE DEDICATED MONDAY PROVIDENCE -- The Department of Environmental Management, in partnership with National Grid, the Town of North Kingstown, the RI Department of Transportation, and Senator Lincoln Chafee, will dedicate the John H. Chafee Nature Preserve at Rome Point on Monday, April 17. The 230-acre preserve was donated to the state by National Grid in 2001 for passive recreational use. The late Senator John H. Chafee was instrumental in inspiring the protection of this prime waterfront property along Narragansett Bay.The property sports a variety of wildlife habitats, a small, rocky beach and hiking trails, and runs from Boston Neck Road east to Narragansett Bay. A new, 29-vehicle public access gravel parking area has been constructed at the trailhead adjacent to Boston Neck Road. -30- DIRECTIONS: Directions from Providence: From Rt. 95 south, take Rt.138 East towards Jamestown/Newport. Take the Rt. 1A exit off Rt.138 (last exit before Jamestown-Verrazano Bridge.) Turn left off exit, heading north onto Boston Neck Road. The parking area is on the right about 3/4 mile north of Rt. 138. |
