DEM'S DIVISION OF FISH AND WILDLIFE OFFERING SEVERAL FISHING PROGRAMS THIS FALL PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management announces that its Division of Fish and Wildlife will hold several fishing programs this fall. Hosted by the Division's Aquatic Resource Education program, the fee-based programs include the basics of surf fishing, an introduction to saltwater flyfishing, a flyfishing trip via train around Aquidneck Island, and fly-tying. Pre-registration is required for most programs.The flyfishing basics program will be held at Scarborough Beach on September 7 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Participants will learn how to cast, tie knots and choose the best lures or bait, and will end the evening with casting practice and fishing. All gear is included. The $25 program is open to adults and children age 10 and older; pre-registration is necessary. On September 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the US Fish and Wildlife Service's Kettle Pond Visitors Center and the Ninigret Wildlife Refuge, both in Charlestown, premier flyfishing instructors will teach participants fly-tying, casting techniques, knot tying, and flyfishing. Lunch, materials, and equipment are included with the $50 registration fee. The program is open to adults and children age 10 and older; pre-registration is necessary. A flyfishing safari around Aquidneck Island on the Old Colony Train will be held on October 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The train will stop at several remote fishing areas around the island. Flyfishing instructors will offer advice on the best flies and flyfishing tactics. Lunch and equipment are included in the $60 fee; pre-registration is necessary. From October 24 to December 19, fly-tying classes will be held each Tuesday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the North Kingstown Community Center. Professional fly-tyers will teach beginning and intermediate fly-tying for both freshwater and saltwater fishing. Cost of the program is $7 for each session, or $49 for all eight sessions.
