DEM ISSUES 2006-2007 HUNTING AND TRAPPING ABSTRACT

Contains Information on New Regulations and Issues of Special Interest to Hunters

PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management's Division of Fish and Wildlife has issued its 2006-2007 hunting and trapping abstract, which provides season dates and bag limits, summarizes updated hunting and trapping regulations, and provides useful information such as sunrise and sunset times, health and safety tips, and check station hours and locations.

The abstract includes information on new regulations, such as:

  • The availability of an expanded antlerless deer hunting opportunity on private land for both muzzle loader and shotgun seasons. Muzzle loader and shotgun hunters must use their antlerless permits only, specific for each season type. Muzzle loader and archery hunters must wear 500 square inches of fluorescent orange clothing during the concurrent shotgun season.
  • The small game season will remain open on management areas during the expanded shotgun deer season.
  • Annual written permission is now required for all deer hunting on private lands.
  • Hunters on Conanicut/Aquidneck Islands (excluding the City of Newport) may take an additional anterless deer for each season type, which adds three deer to the island limit.
  • An experimental "earn-a-buck" permit for mainland bow hunters checking in two female deer from their mainland permits is available. Successful hunters can purchase the "earn-a-buck" permit from DEM's licensing office by presenting their deer tags and affidavits showing proof of taking the two does.
  • An expanded fall turkey season for archery hunters is planned.
The abstract also includes information on Chronic Wasting Disease restrictions on importing deer and deer parts from a number of states, avian influenza information for waterfowl hunters, and the Hunters and Fishermen for the Hungry program, which allows sportsmen and women to donate portions of their catch to local food kitchens and pantries.

The abstract is available on DEM's website, www.dem.ri.gov, by clicking on "Regulations." It is also available at check stations, and at several DEM offices, including the main Division Fish and Wildlife Office at the Oliver Stedman Government Center in Wakefield, the Division's field headquarters and the Great Swamp Management Area in Kingston, and the licensing office at DEM Headquarters, 235 Promenade Street in Providence. The full set of regulations is also available on DEM's website on the "Regulations" page. It may also be viewed at Division Headquarters at the government center.
