DEM INVITES PUBLIC TO ART EXHIBIT AND RECEPTION ON NOVEMBER 15 TO MARK 100 YEARS OF FOREST SERVICE IN RHODE ISLAND
Forest Photography and Art Created from Harvested Wood to be Featured

PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management announces that an art exhibit and reception, free and open to the public, will be held on Wednesday, November 15 in celebration of the centennial of state forestry in Rhode Island.

The evening reception, hosted by DEM's Division of Forest Environment and The Nature Conservancy of Rhode Island, will feature a photography exhibit, "Forests and People: Partners Through Time," by Sal Mancini, and an exhibit of art by selected Rhode Island artists created from wood harvested from the forests of the state. Light refreshments featuring locally grown foods will be available.

The event will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Atrium Gallery at the RI Department of Administration at One Capitol Hill in Providence. It will include a short discussion highlighting the amenities and benefits of Rhode Island's working forestlands, with speakers including DEM Director W. Michael Sullivan, Ph.D. and guests from the US Forest Service, The Nature Conservancy, the Southern New England Forest Consortium, and the RI Resource Conservation and Development Area. Additional partners participating in the centennial event include Ocean Woodturners and the Woodworkers Guild of Rhode Island.

Celebrating 100 years of service to Rhode Islanders, DEM's Division of Forest Environment continues to protect the state's 393,000 acres of public and private woodlands through forest management practices such as forest land use management, insect and disease control, and wildland fire protection. The Division also supports urban forestry efforts and maintains a total of 27,750 acres of scenic public recreational forest land in strategic areas of the state for activities such as camping, hiking, fishing, hunting, cross-country skiing, horseback riding, and swimming.

The November 15 reception marks the final event in the yearlong celebration of the forestry centennial. The photography exhibit itself will be open from November 6 through November 30. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
