DEM ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF MICHAEL L. LAPISKY AS CHIEF OF THE DIVISION OF FISH AND WILDLIFE PROVIDENCE - Department of Environmental Management Director W. Michael Sullivan, Ph.D., today announced the appointment of Michael L. Lapisky as chief of the department's Division of Fish and Wildlife."I am happy to announce Michael Lapisky's appointment to this important post," Sullivan said. "He has devoted his career to the protection of the state's wildlife and habitat, and his broad and extensive knowledge has gained him an enviable reputation in the field. His appointment as chief ensures that the important work conducted by the division will continue seamlessly." A long-time member of the department, Lapisky actually began his career at DEM in 1962 as a seasonal employee, returning every summer until 1972, when he became a full time employee of the department. He joined DEM's Division of Fish and Wildlife as a wildlife biologist in 1972, moving steadily upward through the ranks, and was named deputy chief in 1993, a position he held until becoming acting chief of the division in 2004. Through his years with the department, Lapisky has planned, supervised, and evaluated a staff of wildlife scientists engaged in DEM's comprehensive wildlife management and research program. As deputy chief, he assisted in the planning and administration of programs for the restoration, protection, management, and development of wildlife resources statewide, and as acting chief has held full responsibility for the division. A 1970 graduate of the University of Rhode Island with a major in Natural Resources Management, Lapisky has also done post-graduate work at the University in zoology, botany, and wetlands. He is a certified wildlife biologist with specialized training in a number of areas such as wildlife and oil spill response and habitat evaluation procedures, and is a member of a number of environmental organizations, where he has held leadership positions. Lapisky is a resident of Narragansett, where he previously served as chair of the Narragansett Zoning Board of Review and as chair and vice chair of the Narragansett Conservation Commission. -30- |
