DEM ADVISES MARINERS THAT PERMANENT SUB-SURFACE TRANSECT LINES HAVE BEEN PLACED IN RHODE ISLAND SOUND OVER ARTIFICIAL REEFS

PROVIDENCE - DEM is alerting boaters and divers that researchers from DEM's Division of Fish & Wildlife and the University of Rhode Island have recently anchored a sub-surface transect line utilizing white sinking line over two artificial reefs in Rhode Island Sound. DEM is asking mariners to take heed and not anchor vessels in the vicinity of the reefs so they do not hook the transect line, and is also advising divers not to disturb the line.

The reefs were created with the demolition debris from the Jamestown Bridge and placed within near shore in Rhode Island Sound. The Gooseberry Island reef site is located 1.5 miles south of Lands End in Newport in approximately 80 feet of water. The Sheep Point reef site is located 1.1 miles east of Sheep Point in the vicinity of Lands End in Newport in approximately 65 feet of water.

Coordinates for the Gooseberry Island Reef transect ends are as follows:
NW: 41 25 57.3540 N, 71 19 1.9381 W
SE: 41 25 57.4380 N, 71 19 0.8460 W

Coordinates for the Sheep Point Reef transect ends are as follows:
NW: 41 27 27.60000 N, 71 16 56.8380W
SE: 41 27 21.7320 N, 71 16 51.8939 W

The transect line extends 650 feet across each site in a northwest-southeast direction and is marked at 25-foot increments with orange tape. An anchor with a subsurface float is present at each end of the transect line and a reflector has been attached at the 325-foot mark. The transect line will remain in place indefinitely and should not be removed or tampered with.

For more information or to report any problems regarding the transect line, call Richard Satchwill in DEM's Marine Fisheries section at 423-1930.
