AMC'S NARRAGANSETT CHAPTER VOLUNTEERS WILL MAKE TRAIL IMPROVEMENTS AT BURLINGAME STATE PARK THIS WEEKEND The North-South trail is a multi-use trail that extends the length of Rhode Island from the ocean near Ninigret Pond in Charlestown to the Massachusetts state line along the western edge of the state, passing through several state management areas as well as Burlingame State Park. On Saturday, AMC members and other volunteers will construct about 200 feet of boardwalk spread over 18 sections of the trail that are prone to becoming wet and muddy from rain, snow, and usage, using building materials obtained through an $1,800 grant from the state's Trails Advisory Committee. DEM parks personnel have been assisting in preparing for the event, providing storage space for the boardwalk materials, facilities for cutting the lumber, and transportation of materials to the worksites within the park. The chapter has reserved a number of sites at the campground, and plans events surrounding the construction project, such as a potluck meal at a campsite, swimming, and, when the project is completed, an eight-mile hike on Sunday, on the Gormley trail in the park. Raindates are set for the weekend of September 14 - 16. For information on the weekend, contact AMC Narragansett Chapter trails committee member Chris Shafer at 789-8331. -30- |
