DEM ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS UNTIL FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5, FOR FEDERAL BOATING INFRASTRUCTURE GRANTS

PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management announces that grant applications are being accepted until Friday, October 5, for boating infrastructure grants for facilities that will provide stopover tie-up opportunities for transient recreational boats.

The federal grants, which provide a 75 percent reimbursable match, are for creation or renovation of such facilities as mooring buoys, day docks, navigational aids, transient slips, safe harbors, floating docks and fixed piers, floating and fixed breakwaters, dinghy docks, restrooms, retaining walls, and bulkheads. They can also be used for dockside utilities, pumpout stations, recycling and trash receptacles, electric service, dockside water supplies, dockside pay telephones, debris deflection booms, and marine fueling stations.

Public and private agencies, as well as marinas and other facilities that provide transient tie-up opportunities for non-trailerable recreational boats over 26 feet, are eligible to apply to DEM, which is administering the program on behalf of the Department of the Interior, US Fish and Wildlife Service. DEM will review applications and forward them to the US Fish and Wildlife Service, where they will be reviewed and rated on a national competitive level. About $13 million is expected to be available nationwide for 2008.

Applications for funding should consist of a transmittal letter describing the organization and the facility for which funding is being requested, a concise narrative that addresses the rating criteria, a detailed budget, site maps, and photos. Two original sets of applications should be returned by Friday, October 5, to Najih Lazar, DEM's Division of Fish and Wildlife, 4808 Tower Hill Road, Wakefield, RI 02879.

Further details about the program, including the rating criteria, is available on DEM's website, www.dem.ri.gov, by clicking on "Fish and Wildlife" under "Offices and Divisions," then "Marine Fisheries," then "RFP for Boating Infrastructure Grant." For additional information, contact Najih Lazar at 789-4757.
