DEM TO HOLD SEPTEMBER 25 WORKSHOP ON BROWNFIELDS PROGRAM UPDATES
Draft Environmental Justice Policy Among Topics to be Presented

PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management will hold a workshop on Tuesday, September 25 to discuss recent changes and policy initiatives in the Department's site remediation/brownfields program.

Designed primarily for members of the development and environmental consulting community, the workshop will cover a number of topics, including the consideration of environmental justice in the cleanup and reuse of contaminated properties. A link to DEM's draft guidance policy on the topic can be found on the Department's website, www.dem.ri.gov, by clicking on "Brownfields/Site Remediation Consultant Workshop" under "What's Happening" on the home page.

At the workshop, DEM staff will also speak about proposal guidelines for brownfields assessment, revolving loan fund, and cleanup grants, whose applications are due to the Environmental Protection Agency by October 12.

The 2006 amendments to the state's industrial property and remediation and reuse act will also be discussed, including replacement of Brownfields settlement agreements with remedial agreements, due diligence and enhanced outreach for public recreation and school sites, and provisions to defer cleanup obligations during marketing of properties. In addition, DEM staff will present an update on the discussions and preliminary findings from Rhode Island's Legislative Arsenic Commission.

The workshop will be held on September 25 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Room 300 at DEM Headquarters at 235 Promenade Street in Providence. For additional information, contact Elizabeth Stone at 222-4700 ext. 2422 or via e-mail at Elizabeth.Stone@dem.ri.gov.
