DEM, EPA, AND TOWNS OF SOUTH KINGSTOWN AND NARRAGANSETT TO MARK COMPLETION OF PHASE II ROSE HILL LANDFILL CAP CONSTRUCTION PROVIDENCE - Officials from the Department of Environmental Management, US Environmental Protection Agency, and the Towns of South Kingstown and Narragansett will participate in an event marking the completion of Phase II of the cap construction at the Rose Hill Regional Landfill Superfund Site. The program will take place on site at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 6.The event culminates a four-year project designed to protect the public health and the environment from the former municipal landfill, which was used from 1967 to 1983. Municipal solid waste and industrial wastes from local industries were disposed of at the site and led to contamination of groundwater, surface water, and air in and around the landfill. The site was placed on the Environmental Protection Agency's Superfund National Priority List in 1989. The $14.5 million project was funded under a settlement agreement between the state, EPA, and the Towns of South Kingstown and Narragansett. -30- Directions from Providence: Take Rt. 95 South to Rt. 4 South to Rt.1 South. Turn right onto Rt.138 and follow until you reach Rose Hill Road. Turn left onto Rose Hill Road and follow for 1/2-3/4 mile. Turn left into the entrance to the South Kingstown Transfer Station. |
