DEM AND PARTNERS TO ANNOUNCE PRESERVATION OF 486-ACRE TUCKAHOE TURF FARMS IN RICHMOND ON OCTOBER 22 PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management, in partnership with the RI Agricultural Land Preservation Commission and The Nature Conservancy, will announce the acquisition of farmland development rights to the 486-acre Tuckahoe Turf Farms in Richmond on Wednesday, October 22.The farmland is located on the easterly and westerly sides of Switch Road, with frontage on both the Wood River and Meadowbrook Pond. The property features a public fishing area and connects the state's Carolina Management Area and other protected farmland. The preservation of this property creates a conservation area of 3,000 contiguous acres. In addition, The Nature Conservancy's Carter Preserve is located south of the Tuckahoe property and represents another 850 acres of preserved lands. DEM will also release findings from the FY 2008 Land Acquisition Report, which details the amount of farmland, open space and recreational land preserved this year. Speakers will include Governor Donald L. Carcieri, State Representative Donna Walsh, DEM Director W. Michael Sullivan, PhD, Janet Coit, Executive Director of The Nature Conservancy, George Bates, owner of the farm, and Roylene Rides at the Door, State Conservationist with the US Department of Agriculture/Natural Resources Conservation Service. -30- Directions from Providence:Follow Rt. 95 South to exit 3A. Take ramp right for RI-138 East toward Kingston/Newport. Keep straight onto SR-138/Kingstown Road. Turn right onto SR 112/Richmond Townhouse Road, then right onto SR-91/Alton Carolina Road and follow until you reach Switch Road. |
