DEM TO HOST GRAND FINALE FOR GREAT OUTDOORS PURSUIT THIS SUNDAY

PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management announces that the grand finale of the 2009 Rhode Island Great Outdoors Pursuit will take place on Sunday, August 23 from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Brenton Point State Park in Newport.

The event will feature entertainment and environmental education for all ages. Kit Kites will fill the Newport sky with kite flying activities including Racing of the Bols and a Kite Candy Drop. Big Nazo's strolling characters will create wild fun and excitement among patrons. Pursuit teams will also compete in a timed obstacle course that will challenge them to recognize an Asian Longhorned Beetle and a deer tick, both of which are considered invasive species and pose a threat to the environment and public health. Prizes, provided by local sponsors, include a complete camping vacation and equipment package, a kayak, and bikes. Prizes will be awarded at 3:00 p.m. A complete list of activities is posted at: http://www.riparks.com.

DEM launched the Great Rhode Island Outdoors Pursuit last year to reunite families with the outdoors, encourage more physical activity, build the next generation of environmental stewards, and showcase state parks and forests. This year 379 teams registered for the Pursuit, including over 1,600 participants.

In the event of severe inclement weather on the day of the event, call (401) 847-2400 after 8:00 a.m. for cancellation information.
