DEM'S LOW GROUND PRESSURE EXCAVATOR AND OTHER EQUIPMENT TO BE USED TODAY IN SALT MARSH RESTORATION PROJECT BEING CONDUCTED AT CARDS PONDS IN SOUTH KINGSTOWN
The Cards Ponds coastal habitat restoration project was initiated three years ago by the US Fish & Wildlife Service to restore tidal flow to Cards Ponds and re-establish the ponds as a habitat for various marine fish. As an added value, the restoration of tidal flow will contribute to mosquito abatement by reducing mosquito breeding grounds.
The area has been taken over by Phragmites, an invasive tall grass. The excavator will be used today to remove the Phragmites in an old channel between the three separate ponds that make up Cards Ponds. Workers will also install a 50-foot long culvert today using a backhoe, the excavator and a track dumpster.
Work on the project will also be conducted Thursday morning.
