Private Well Installation
The Well Drilling Program regulates the siting, design and installation of private drinking water wells. It also provides for the registration of well drillers and pump installers and maintains a current list of companies and/or individuals who are properly registered. Rules and Regulations stipulate the design and construction requirements for drilling new wells or improving old wells. Permits are not necessary but well drillers are required to adhere to the siting standards included in the Rules. Records of well installations including size, location, geology, depth and yield are maintained within the Department.
Any person or well driller having need to deviate from the siting standards must submit a variance request to the Department. An estimated 500-1000 private drinking water wells are installed annually in Rhode Island. Complaints from the public involving water quality from private wells are coordinated with the Department of Health and other groundwater protection programs or other divisions/ agencies where appropriate.
