Shellfish Water Quality Monitoring
Each shellfish-shipping state adopts
adequate laws & regulations for sanitary control of the shellfish industry,
completes sanitary surveys of growing areas, delineates & patrols restricted
areas, inspects shellfish plants & conducts such additional inspections,
laboratory investigations, &control measures as are necessary to ensure that
the shellfish reaching the consumer were grown, harvested & processed in a
sanitary manner. The state annually issues numbered certificates to shellfish
dealers who comply with the agreed-upon sanitary standards & forwards
copies of the interstate certificates the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The FDA makes an annual review of each state shellfish control program, including
the inspection of a representative number of shellfish processing
plants & publishes a monthly list of valid interstate shellfish shipper certificates.
