Mosquitoes, EEE, and West Nile Virus
Mosquito abatement operations in Rhode Island are conducted primarily through municipal mosquito control programs. Contact your city or town hall to learn more about the status of activities being conducted in your community.
At the state level, the Departments of Environmental Management (DEM) and Health (DOH) are actively involved in various aspects of mosquito control.
DEM, through its Mosquito Abatement Coordination Office (401-789-6280) conducts weekly mosquito trapping at sites throughout the state to check for the presence of the Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) and West Nile (WNV) viruses in the mosquito populations. For recorded information, call the hotline at 401-222-2793. DEM also provides grants, training, and other types of technical assistance to local officials; coordinates an EEE Advisory Committee; and educates the public regarding preventative steps that should be taken to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.
DOH works closely with DEM to help educate Rhode Island residents and visitors about the most effective ways to reduce risk of mosquito bites - use repellent, wear protective clothing, and fix window and door screens. Active surveillance for encephalitis is occurring and suspected cases are investigated. Sudden, unexpected deaths from unknown causes are investigated by the State Medical Examiner. DOH serves on the EEE Advisory Committee and works in concert with DEM on environmental issues of public health importance.
