Alternative Forest Businesses
Approximately 55 percent of Rhode Island is
forested, however this resource is being lost and fragmented by intense
development pressure. Due to the small size, low productivity, and short
ownership tenure of forested parcels in Rhode Island, the production of
traditional wood products often isn't feasible. Alternative uses may be an
option for landowners who wish to actively manage their property and may
provide an additional incentive for large landowners to retain their land.
Managing for Alternative Forest Uses may provide new ways for landowners
to generate income; at least enough to pay property taxes and may have the
potential to develop into a small business. This complements other DEM
programs, preventing fragmentation of forestland and promotes
sustainability, and is meeting the needs of the current population without
compromising the resource for future generations
