Scituate Reservoir Greenspace Project

The Scituate Reservoir, which is operated by the Providence Water Supply Board, supplies water to approximately 60 percent of Rhode Islanders. The watershed consists of over 59, 000 acres in the Towns of Cranston, Foster, Glocester, Johnston, and Scituate. About 25 percent of the watershed is owned and managed by the Providence Water Supply Board, the remainder is in private ownership.

Land use in the watershed is the single most important factor affecting water quality. To assist the five watershed communities protect water quality, as well as maintain the rural character of the watershed, DEM and the Providence Water Supply Board assisted the five watershed communities identify and prioritize their important natural, cultural, and recreational resources. The result is a compilation of town wide maps of potential conservation lands illustrating the areas identified as the most important priorities for protecting natural resources, highlighting a regional green space protection strategy.
