There is increased interest in redirecting development into urban areas. Revitalization of urban communities makes economic sense since infrastructure (roads, sewers, etc.) already exist in these areas. It also conserves open space by taking development pressure off farms and forests. The Sustainable Watersheds Office, with funding from the EPA, initiated the development of the Urban Environmental Design Manual to provide a comprehensive guide to promote environmentally responsible urban revitalization and infill development. The Urban Design Manual and its Appendix provide guidance for local officials, community groups, residents, and the development community to address the challenge of redeveloping urban sites while protecting, preserving, and restoring Rhode Islands' environment. |
