A DEM-approved contractor uses a monitoring device to check for mercury contamination in the stairways of an apartment building near a spill. In just a few seconds, this device - a Jerome Meter - can detect as little as a millionth of a gram of mercury in a cubic meter (more than 35 cubic feet) of air.
