Over the course of a couple of weeks, mercury contamination spread from an industrial storage facility, to a nearby parking lot, to walkways throughout an whole apartment complex, into private homes and then the fibers of some residents' clothes. The concentartion of mercury can be tested by putting the sensor of an analyzing instrument into a bag that holds the clothes. In this case, the clothes tested positive and must be removed.
