Riparian Restoration - Current Projects
Smithfield Public Works
This site located at 3 Spragueville rd at the Southern tip of the Stillwater Reservoir and at the Northwest edge of Mountaindale Pond. Much of this Site is actively used by Smithfield Public Works and over half of the acreage is impervious surfaces.
Restoration will consist of returning the riparian buffer to an unmanaged one with the help of plantings. Most of the invasive species in the area (Japanese Knotweed, and Asiatic Bittersweet are shade intolerant and will be out competed by the plantings. Some grading of the bank and debris removal is also part of this restoration project.
Projected Completion Date:
This former mill site is located at 50 aleppo street in Providence. The area was used as a mixed industrial area until a fire caused the site to be abandoned. Located in a dense residential/commercial area this site is a chance for some urban land restoration and to add some open space to the community.
Plans for the site are to turn it into a park and add a bikeway coming in from the northwestern edge of the property. Along with revegitating the main area of the mill site with grass for the park, riparian restoration will also be preformed along the areas of the site that abut the Woonasquatucket. Stream bank grading and additional plantings of native trees will be used to restore the riparian area.
