Woonasquatucket Watershed Landuse and Zoning Project
Residential Neighborhoods along the Woonasquatucket River are experiencing transience and instability. West of Downtown Providence, the river corridor is experiencing development pressures, and little has been done to ensure that new developments will promote neighborhood stabilization, retention of residents, and a strong work force in our urban center. The Woonasquatucket River corridor offers opportunities to promote beneficial reuse of our Brownfields through appropriately scaled infill development and promote the restoration of the river as an important, accessible, natural resource.
The purpose of this project is to use smart growth principles to promote productive reinvestment and infill development of Brownfields and vacant or underutilized urban properties. Implementation of land use policies, zoning ordinances and environmental regulations will be used as tools to contribute to the residential stabilization of urban neighborhoods by promoting appropriately scaled economic development and protection/ restoration of existing natural resources for the benefit of urban residents.
DEM Sustainable Watersheds Office, City of Providence, and The Woonasquatucket Watershed Council along with the consulting firm Environmental Science Services, Inc. ) teamed up to create the greenway Project. The activities of this project will be to reconnect the neighborhoods to the river and each other, provide for economic reinvestment, promote walkable neighborhoods, and restore the river habitat as an environmental and recreational asset for local residents. This project will be developed in conjunction with the Urban Design Manual in order to take full advantage of the two projects complimentary nature.
