Environmental Packaging International (EPI) is a small environmental consulting firm located in Jamestown, Rhode Island, specializing in environmental compliance, product stewardship, and sustainability issues related to packaging, batteries, electronics, and other products. In June 2010, EPI moved into its brand new 2,900 square foot “green” office building, next to its previous offices in Jamestown. Built according to the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED standards, the new building is designed to help EPI minimize its environmental impact by reducing waste, as well as water and energy consumption.

EPI’s new facility features four sections of green roof totaling 1,200 square feet (designed and installed by Apex Green Roofs of Somerville, MA), which reduces the volume of stormwater runoff from the building while providing cooling effects in the summer and insulation in the winter. The green roof combines innovative design with high performing, low maintenance plants to create a beautiful, functional landscape atop the building. It was planted with a mix of sedum and herbaceous perennial plugs, all of which were chosen to thrive in a harsh, rooftop environment. After initial establishment, the green roof will not require any irrigation, with all water needed by the plants provided by natural rainfall. The vegetation is supported by an engineered growing media, which is lightweight, provides good drainage, has a very low organic content, and will not become compacted. As a result, the media maximizes plant health and minimizes nutrient runoff into the surrounding environment.

The new building also features dual-flush toilets and waterless urinals in the restrooms to promote significant water conservation, and Turfstone concrete paver walkways that promote lower local air temperatures and substantially reduce stormwater runoff by allowing rainwater to filter back into the soil naturally and gradually through openings in the paver grid.
