Wheeler School in Providence was awarded Narragansett Bay Commission’s 2009 Annual Storm Water Management Award for implementing a variety of stormwater management techniques on their Providence campus. A green roof was installed on the roof of the new student center. The roof is composed of a variety of sedum, a plant that has high water retention, and is able to filter pollutants. In addition, the green roof helps to cool the building. The school also installed an underground dry well system that prevents polluted stormwater from flowing into the city sewer system and eventually Narragansett Bay.
