RI Farmland Access Clearinghouse

The Division of Agriculture and our partners have identified improving access to farmland as a major priority. Farmland values in Rhode Island are among the highest in the country and lack of access to affordable farmland threatens RI’s agricultural sector. Listed below are ways to access farmland around the state. If you are looking to sell the development rights to your farmland, please visit the state Farmland Preservation Program page here.

Looking for farmland? START HERE.

Fill out a farm seeker form: Fill out this intake form to be included on a list of “farm seekers”. Our farmland access consortium members will help “seekers” from this list find farmland. If we identify a parcel of land that matches what you listed in filling out the Farm Seeker Form, one of the program partners will be in touch with you.

Contact Land for Good: Need one-on-one help finding the right piece of farmland for you? Sign up for free consultation with Land for Good’s RI Field Agent, Tess Brown-Lavoie, by filling out this form. Land For Good is a regional organization working to help farmers access land across the New England region.

FARMLAND OPPORTUNITIES

DEM’s Farmland Access Program: This new program, currently in the start-up phase, allows the Department to partner with the State’s Agricultural Land Preservation Commission to purchase farmland, protect it, and affordably sell it to farmers looking for land. Stay tuned for future farmland purchase opportunities.

State-sponsored farmland leasing opportunities:

  • Snake Den Farm, Johnston: This 150-acre farm, owned by DEM and managed by the Northern RI Conservation District, is leased out to farmers via long-term lease arrangements. They offer access to water, barn storage, and convenient access to markets. Current RFP applications due by October 31, 2017. Contact Kate Sayles for more information.
  • Urban Edge Farm, Cranston: This 50-acre farm, owned by DEM and managed by the Southside Community Land Trust, is leased out to farmers who collaboratively manage the farm’s operation and maintenance. They offer access to water, barn storage, cold storage, washing stations, and convenient access to markets. Contact Rob Booz for more information.
  • RI Farmland Listings: To post a listing, please email Ken Ayars.

Recommended farmland listing websites:

  • New England Farmland Finder: A regional clearinghouse for farmland opportunities across New England. Find a farm, post your farmland opportunity, or find resources for farmland seekers and landowners interested in making their land available for farming.
  • Land, Jobs, Stuff: A google group bulletin board for farmland opportunities, farm jobs, and other miscellaneous agricultural listings in southern New England. Maintained by the Southeastern Massachusetts Agricultural Partnership (SEMAP).

FOR LANDOWNERS - Do you have farmland available for sale or lease?

If you have farmland FOR SALE:

  • Post your opportunity on New England Farmland Finder
  • Consider DEM's Farmland Access Program. For farmland owners who are ready to sell their land, this program provides an alternative to development. We pay fair market value for farmland and will ensure your farm remains in agriculture. Once DEM purchases the land, we will place permanent agricultural restrictions on the property, and will then sell it to a farmer who is looking for additional land or just starting out. Contact Michelle Sheehan for more information or to have your property considered for purchase.
  • Sign up for landowner assistance from Land For Good by filling out this form.
