The RIDEM Division of Fish and Wildlife offers free wildlife curriculum kits and learning resources for formal and informal K-8 educators through our Rhody Critter Kits Program. Each kit contains lesson plans, activities, videos, hands-on learning materials, and other resources curated by our Wildlife Outreach staff, with special emphasis on Rhode Island’s wildlife species, conservation work, and management practices.
These kits have been designed to connect students to the wildlife resources right in their own backyards and communities. Materials were developed and selected to correlate to the following Next Generation Science Standards:
|LS1A||Structure and Function|
|LS2A||Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems|
|LS2C||Ecosystem Dynamics, Functioning, and Resilience|
|LS4D||Biodiversity and Humans|
|ES3C||Human Impacts on Earth Systems|
Wildlife Outreach staff offer free training workshops for each kit. These workshops are intended to support educators by providing in-depth background information, hands-on learning experiences, the opportunity to ask questions, and to build community. For information about upcoming workshops, check the events calendar on the Wildlife Outreach Program home page, subscribe to our monthly outreach email, or follow us on Facebook and Instagram!
COVID-19 Update: As a precaution to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the Wildlife Outreach Program will not be lending out the hands-on kit containers for the 2020-21 school year. Until further notice, educator workshops will be presented virtually.
The Rhody Critter Kits Program is made possible through support from the Wildlife & Sport Fish Restoration Program and State Wildlife Grants.
